I feel so hopeless when it comes to driving. I don't think I'll ever overcome this fear. I feel worthless, because everyone can drive but me. When I was little I crashed an ATV into a bush, I always thought "what if I were in a car, I could've killed someone". Now I'm 18 and still no license. I've aced all the bookwork, and got my permit, but I get scared. I think I'll hurt/kill someone, or hit something. The only jobs I apply for are the ones I can walk or bike to. I'll never become something if I don't drive, but if I drive I know I'll fuck up. I'm always pressured to drive, but I know what will happen. Makes me fell like shit. I know boohoo. Sorry for burdening you with this post, but I had to get it off my chest. Hope someone can help, but I understand if no one can. I realize that I am a lost cause...

Jacob, don't despair. My fear is highway driving, not driving in general, but just the fact that you are looking for change is hopeful. Obviously everyone on this forum has or has had issues with driving, so you are definitely not alone! Just the fact that you are looking for help is a good sign.

Think about it this way - "everyone" else can drive...that means, so can you! Start small...say a big parking lot on a Sunday or something like that, where there are no other cars. Bring someone with you that will be encouraging and music that you enjoy. I used the big empty parking lot scenario when my girls were first learning to drive. It lets you practice safely.

Another thought is, have you taken Driver's Ed? It's not cheap, but they will cover all the basics and I guarantee there will be a worse driver in the class than you! Since the instructor has his/her own set of brakes and their own life at stake, they won't put you into any situation that is potentially dangerous.

I myself am tired of not being able to drive on the freeway and though it scares me, I know I can overcome my fear and be able to have that freedom. I believe you can do the same with your fears.

You are not a lost cause!

I've seen way too many people overcome their fears after decades to think ANYONE is a lost cause!
