I'm 26 and still don't have a license. Whenever I get behind the wheel, I feel like hyperventilating and I get tunnel vision. Things happen that really discourage me, like confusing the gas with the break pedal and almost hitting something. Yesterday when I was out practicing, I pulled into a stranger's driveway to turn around, and almost crashed into their house. I just wanted to crawl into a hole and cry. I'm recently married with a baby on the way. My hubby works over 40 hours a week and can't be around to drive me everywhere. Even if he were, the guilt of making him drive all the time is killing me. Whats even more embarrassing is that I still rely on my parents for a ride to and from work. I hate it when a coworker sees me getting in/out of my mom or dad's car; it's like a punch in the stomach every time. I'm too embarrassed to talk about it to anyone, I feel like a child. I'll pretend I can drive, but that I just don't have a car. I just can't take their looks of shock when I tell them I never got a license. I didn't even come clean about my driving to my husband until we had been dating several months and were practically engaged (thank God he's a good man). A few years ago, I dated a guy for 5 months and never told him that I didn't have a license. I know that's screwed up, but thing thing has become a full-blown complex since I'm so sensitive about it. I live in constant fear of being judged because of my incapacitation. I just want it to end. Thanks so much for reading this and hopefully we can get through this eventually.

You are not alone. I am a 52 yr old woman living in NYC so I never really had the need to drive due to the availability of 24hr public transportation. I got my license on my 50th birthday but have not driven since. When I was practicing to get my driver's license, I would sometimes mistake the gas for the breaks. I would sometimes signal turning right & then turn left or make a turn without checking to see who is behind me. Even though I was determined to get my license there were days when I dreaded going to my driving lessons..I would start taking lessons & then stop..it took me 9 YEARS but I finally got it. I plan on going for another practice lesson this Saturday just to be make sure that I remember everything and then rent a car and just drive within my area until I get comfortable with driving again. Whatever you do...DON'T GIVE UP!!!! You will be glad that you didn't even if it takes you 9 years too!!!

Good Luck!!!

ermm.. you're not alone.

my mother still does not have a driver's license. the hr manager in my previous company still cannot drive.

i think you can get out of the fear of driving slowly but surely.
you can take baby steps and take each one day at a time, like driving out of your street the first day, going to walmart the next & then maybe to walgreens. until you find yourself just driving through the highway.

just a suggestion. =P

goodluck!
