Rich do you mind if I use this forum as a work notebook. I think that it would be easier for me to keep this on one platform and posting here also allows some interaction with others if they would like to read and comment.

My biggest fears in driving are:

1. Losing control and doing something I'd be ashamed of like driving off of the road and causing damage to the car and getting hurt. I think that I am really more afraid of looking stupid then I am of getting hurt. The fear has become a thing in itself. I'm just afraid of driving fast.

2. I am afraid of getting in the way of other cars and trucks coming up behind me.

3. I am afraid of not being able to stop or get out of a dangerous situation. I think, "what if I am on the highway and I want to stop?", "what if I forget to pay attention to the road or am distracted". "What if I become to comfortable driving and forget that I am holding the while and not a passenger?"

Does any of that make any sense?

I drove for hours yesterday. Drove too slow on major roads, I am sure that driving the way I am full of tension and too slow is actually more dangerous then driving too fast could be. I get an opposite reaction from myself in bad situations. Driving on a narrow winding road with a big truck speeding up behind me, I hit the brakes and drive slower and feel that he will be forced to drive right in to be from behind. On the open road with cars all around or none at all I drive much slower then I do in narrow twisting roads. Logic says that if I can handle the car on a narrow twisting road and not lose my position in my lane, then I should have no problem at all in a wide open road with a few lines in my direction and wide shoulders. But again my reaction is opposite.

Maybe for some reason I am afraid of overcoming the fear. Does that make any sense?

Sure, go ahead!

I think being afraid of change is a BIG thing, and a wonderful realization on your part.

I can drive good on narrow winding lanes. For me the freeways and highways scare the daylights out of me. What makes it worse for me is bridges, over passes, and wall barriers. I agree more space should be easier to drive on. I wonder What is the reason it is not?????
