I got my license when I was 16 years old, it took me two times but passed the driving and written exam. I was comfortable driving with my dad in his small pick up truck, but then after I got my license and I was allowed on my own....I just never went out there.
In fact, I was so overwhelmed by the idea of it I stopped driving completely, even though my dad still offered to be there with me for awhile longer.
He passed away two years ago and one of the last things he wanted me to do was drive!
I am 26 years old now, I have a good job, but have turned away better jobs because they are too far away, too inconvenient for my husband to drop me off, or not on the bus route. I also have a chance to work at a really great place but there is no way I can do it unless I drive.
After getting married my husbands parents gave us a generous amount of money to put towards a new vehicle. It has been exciting looking at vehicles, but i'm not so sure I want to drive any of them.
My husband says I can pick out whatever I want as long as I drive it!
How did some of you get over a driving fear? I've never been in a bad accident, i've never known anyone who was killed in a car accident. I just think of all these terrible things that could happen and it's overwhelming. I realize it's a bit nuts and while all those bad things could happen it's not enough for how much this impacts my life and almost makes me feel disabled in a way!
Anyway...I honestly didn't know the fear of driving was so common. Most co-workers and friends just think I'm crazy.
